5-Day Jungle Course (Ableton + Akai MPC) Student type: Beginner–intermediate, 1-to-1 intensive Goal: Learn how to make authentic 90s jungle using both modern DAW (Ableton) and hardware (Akai MPC), guided by your expertise. Day 1 – Foundations & Setup (7 hours) Morning (3 hrs) History of Jungle & influences (early 90s rave, reggae/dub, hip hop sampling). Classic gear rundown (Akai S950, MPC60, Amiga trackers, hardware mixers). Setting up Ableton & MPC for workflow. Importing breaks, vinyl rips, and sample management. Afternoon (4 hrs) Drum breaks intro (Amen, Think, Apache). Chopping in MPC vs slicing in Ableton. Creating first loop. Homework: Find & prep 3 of your own breaks. Day 2 – Drum Programming & Groove Morning (3 hrs) Jungle drum science (swing, shuffle, ghost notes). Building break edits manually (classic cut-ups). Layering kicks/snares with MPC + Ableton Drum Racks. Afternoon (4 hrs) Drum FX (time-stretch, filter, bitcrush). Parallel compression & saturation for punch. Recreate a classic jungle loop. Homework: Make 3 variations of a break pattern. Day 3 – Basslines & Sampling Morning (3 hrs) History of jungle bass (808 subs, Reese, Hoover). Designing basslines in Ableton (Operator, Sampler). MPC resampling tricks. Afternoon (4 hrs) Chopping reggae/dub vocals. Pitching + timestretch tricks. Classic dub FX (delays, spring reverb, tape hiss). Homework: Build a bassline + vocal sample hook. Day 4 – Arrangement & Track Building Morning (3 hrs) Jungle arrangement structures (intro, drop, breakdowns, switch-ups). Scene launching in Ableton. Translating MPC patterns to full arrangements. Afternoon (4 hrs) Layering pads, atmospheres, and FX. Editing for tension & energy. Make a full 4–5 min skeleton track. Homework: Refine track, add personal samples. Day 5 – Mixing, Authentic Vibe & Final Project Morning (3 hrs) Mixing 90s jungle style (lo-fi warmth vs modern clarity). EQ carving, gain staging, balance. Glue compression, tape emulation. Afternoon (4 hrs) Final track polishing. Mastering basics (limiting, loudness). Export finished track. End with a listening session & feedback.
